How to store research peptides

Storage is the part of handling a researcher controls, and the part most often got wrong. What follows describes sealed, unopened lyophilized material — the form everything in this catalogue ships as.

Lyophilized peptides are stored sealed, dry and cold. Freeze-drying removes the water that most degradation pathways need, so sealed desiccated powder tolerates ambient shipping and is held long-term at refrigerated or frozen temperatures. The certificate for a lot states the conditions that lot was released under.

Why lyophilized material is stable in the first place

Freeze-drying removes water from the vial. Water is what nearly every degradation pathway a peptide has needs in order to proceed: hydrolysis of the peptide bond, deamidation of asparagine and glutamine residues, and oxidation all run in solution and effectively stall in a dry solid.

This is why lyophilized powder is not fragile in the way an aqueous solution is, and why a sealed, desiccated vial travels reliably at ambient temperature. It is a statement about the physical form, not a claim about any particular compound.

The three variables that matter

  • Moisture. The single most important one. A vial supplied with desiccant and an intact seal stays dry; a vial opened in a humid room does not, because lyophilized powder is hygroscopic and will pull water out of the air.
  • Temperature. Lower is slower. Degradation rates fall with temperature, which is why long-term storage is refrigerated or frozen even for material that ships at ambient.
  • Light. Relevant for sequences containing tryptophan, tyrosine, methionine or cysteine, and for metal-complexed peptides. Amber glass or an outer carton addresses it.

What the certificate tells you, and what it does not

Storage conditions on a certificate of analysis are the conditions the lot was released under and tested against. They are specific to that lot. A certificate for one lot says nothing about another, and a retest or expiry date on it refers to material held under those stated conditions in an unopened vial.

A certificate does not tell you how the vial was treated after it left the laboratory. That is the purchaser's record to keep.

Why shipments are not refrigerated

Sealed lyophilized powder does not need a cold chain for transit, and saying otherwise would be a logistics claim we could not honour. Material dispatched from this catalogue travels at ambient temperature, which is appropriate for the form and stated plainly rather than dressed up as something colder.

A gel pack in a box that spends two days in a warehouse is theatre. An intact seal and a desiccant sachet are not.

Seal integrity is the thing to inspect

On receipt, the checks worth making are physical: is the vial intact, is the stopper seated and the crimp undisturbed, is the desiccant present, and does the lot number on the label match the certificate you are looking up. A vial that fails any of those is a vial whose history you cannot describe.

Different chemistries, different sensitivities

Storage is largely a property of the physical form rather than the sequence, but not entirely. Metal-complexed peptides such as GHK-Cu carry a coordinated ion whose state is part of the material's identity. Recombinant proteins such as IGF-1 LR3 are larger and more conformationally fragile than a short synthetic sequence. Multi-component blends contain compounds whose individual stability profiles differ, so the vial is only as stable as its least stable component.
