What does research use only mean?

It means the material is supplied for laboratory research. It is not a drug, food, dietary supplement, cosmetic or medical device, it is not for human or veterinary consumption, and no claim is made that it treats or prevents anything.

Research use only describes the basis on which material is supplied, not a disclaimer added afterwards. It commits us to specific behaviour: we make no claim that any material diagnoses, treats, cures, mitigates or prevents any condition, we do not group the catalogue by what compounds are for, and we do not provide dosing, administration or reconstitution guidance for human or animal use in any channel.

It asks something of the purchaser too. Ordering requires a declaration that material is for laboratory research use only, and the exact wording shown to you along with the date you accepted it is recorded against your account.

It says nothing about grade. Research-use material should be, and here is, characterised so its properties are known: identity confirmed by mass spectrometry, purity measured by HPLC, and results attributable to a named independent laboratory and to a specific lot.

What it is not

It is not a legal loophole, and it is not code for anything. A phrase that meant one thing in published copy and another in practice would be worth less than no phrase at all, so the constraint is applied consistently — including in places where relaxing it would obviously sell more material.

It is also not the same as pharmaceutical grade, and neither term is a substitute for the other. Pharmaceutical grade refers to manufacture under a specific regulatory framework for a specific approved use. Research use describes the intended context of supply. A compound can be extremely well characterised and still be research-use material, which is the situation for everything in this catalogue.

The practical test of whether a supplier means it is what they refuse to tell you. A supplier who states research use only in the footer and then answers a dosing question by email has a disclaimer rather than a position.
